Starting at a new school means new staff!

To kill the time i sharpened my drawing by casually noting the profiles of my professors for the semester.

Each color to signifies how I perceived their personalities on the first day.

First Impressions ARE every thing.

My favorite thing to do in the world is to observe people!

The worst feeling on earth is disappointment, and as my biggest critic I felt at the start of my second semester of my second year that I had a lot of growing to do as a designer.

It is said that as a young adult in college we must use this time to figure out who we our… how we fit into this world. The interior architecture program ensures that apart of finding that person, we must find our designer identity.

At first I figured I knew who I was as a designer but as the semester progressed I began to learn new things about my self and acknowledge others which went unnoticed.

These realizations occurred when we were asked to write a short essay on who we felt we were as young designers… our strengths, weaknesses and future goals. I must admit that now having lived through this strenuous semester that my strengths and weaknesses have shifted a little but it is my list of goals that have changed completely.

202 has taught me things that I will take with me as I continue on the search of finding my designer voice. There are so many things that I realized that I want to do in the world of design as well as many things that I wish to stay far away from.

Writing about my self was not an easy task but it helped me to pin point things that I would have never took the time to sit and think about. It is important to document your idea’s, thoughts and feelings as we all grow as designers so we can look back and reflect, making it easier to move forward in an efficient positive direction.

Working in groups has always been an issue for me because I feel like I have always carried others or the main idea for the design is one of my own that others take credit for. This semester I decided to take a different approach to group work and I focused on listening to others rather than voicing my own voice.

However, I made sure to always have an input into the designs to ensure that a little piece of me is apart of the final outcome.

At the beginning it was a pleasant experience working in the groups of three, especially when my other two peers had many commonalities to me as a designer. But as the numbers got greater and there were more opinions and minds to consider it became overwhelming.

It was often difficult to decide on one solid decision because there was always someone who did not agree.

As time went on and the groups formed into twelve we learned how satisfy these issues by dividing up tasks in which each individuals would take the reign on specific tasks. We found this to be much more successful, time efficient and extremely productive.

As the semester comes to a close I can honestly say that I still find writing assignments rather annoying and a little tedious however, I have realized the opportunity in them and why they are so important.

While I reflect on my second year in the Interior Architecture program, I compare studio’s and try to decide which opportunity was the better of the two. Was it the amazing result of great projects that can be used for future portfolio’s or the rich and valuable lesson learned that will shadow me for the remainder of my deign career?

In this early stage of my design journey it is hard to say but what I can say is that there are many things in this life that we unwillingly will have to do, but if we do them to the best of our ability, with a keen pure heart with a splash of professionalism you will benefit from it in the years to come.

As a first year student we all come into this program fresh and new to the program. The amount of work and hours we must put in on top of the quality expected of us.
After the Tuesday First year presentations I felt that Danielle Mittman has the spirit of a dedicated student. Her deliverables as both a whole and individually were strong.

It was very clever to have three different floor plans. I appreciated the fact that you showed the technical floor plan, rendered and the exterior floor plan. I was sitting very far to the back and I could still see them clearly. [ Beautiful Rendered Floor Plan ]

Your perspectives were great however I feel that your title block was a little large and distracting. A word of constructive criticism would be that if you are going to leave white area's of space, exaggerate that technique next time. Focus on highlighting special area's with color and leaving the rest of the page white as if materials bleed only in that one spot.
It was smart to include exterior perspectives because it gives your audience the full experience therefore concluding the space as a whole.

Don't talk to the wall as much, your audience is in the opposite direction. It would have also been nice to see fully rendered elevations as it would have completed your project.

Over all I felt that your project was very strong and had a cohesive idea that showed through your deliverables.

(If you check out my blog you will notice that this semester I designed a unit with similar curves that I saw all throughout your space. It was ironic at how similar they were.)

Great Job. I look forward to seeing your work in the years to come.

On the edge of the world sits a place where culture, creativity, lifestyle and intellect thrive and shine as bright as the golden sand that lies on its beaches.

Standing on a measureless harbor that is ringed by a natural amphitheatre of hills is a city that sits on the north island of New Zealand.

Wellington, the capital city, embodies and reflects the concepts of movement and unrestricted flow of our structure as a whole.

The city is an artistic scene. Its picturesque surroundings prompt for walks around the beautiful harbor and hills.

Looking at the relationships and connections between the landscape and the structure, we interpret how the building relates to its surroundings through architecture. The climate is a temperate marine one that is generally moderate all year round, but the winds make it seem much colder than what the actual temperature may be. The natural winds of the landscape speak to the free flow movement of horizontal lines of the structure.

The nearby ocean represents ideas of translucency and reflection and is shown through materialization by the excessive use of glass.

The beaches represent a horizontal lifting within a semi-mountainous landscape.

Areas of near by terrain allude to a sense of traveling upwards and establishing a language of vertical lightness much like the one we depict through the structure with the idea of lifting upward through the use of vertical beams that swell in and out on all facades.

The color palette and material choice was particularly inspired by the natural terrain and surrounding buildings around it. Our design achieves a sense of unity and integration between the structure and the landscape.

Although Wellington’s population is 180,000, we ensure that our complex provides restricted access and privacy along with the benefit of extended stay. The attitude of the area, café culture and vibrant nightlife adds to the quality of living in such a place.

“Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light.” - Le Corbusier
Inducing previous concepts formed in Jenga 3.0 and 4.0, we rethink the captivation produced within a dematerialization of space. In our explorations of illusion and lightness of space we recognize pathways, centers, and nodes etc. as opportunities to forecast a sense of intrigue. The linking of Caravaggio and Evolution amalgamates former concepts to form a loose circulation pattern amidst each of their parts as they come together as a whole. Our chosen team name, “Trepide,” is latin for “in confusion.” This relates to the idea of creating illusions within our architectural design, specifically the illusion of the dematerialization of form. This dematerialization is accomplished through the use of glass and natural light, as well as manipulation of architectural elements such as columns.
Our design work will pay attention to the elements of place explored in Roberto Rengel’s
Shaping Interior Space: domains, centers, paths, nodes, edges, connecters, ends, etc.

In an effort to rethink a traditional frame of boundaries within our spaces, we take note of Jean Bauldrillard’s notions of the concepts in simulacrum or producing a copy without an original in regards to new considerations in order to fill in a basis of substance to begin with. We are forewarned that our additions must meet and develop upon this substance with no degree of simulation involved in our new developments, but rather a redefining of original concepts. In this process of redefining our original concepts, we will also be sure to include the process of questioning our own work, ensuring a close relationship to our design basis. Thoughtfully developing our project in this way shall include our own take on John Summerson’s approach to design history, as seen in his book Heavenly Mansions. Summerson teaches us to think about and question what we learn, in order to develop our own thoughts about history and design as a whole. We are to actively take part in the process, and not simply take things for what they appear to be worth. Witold Rybczynski’s book Home: A Short History of an Idea, while largely historical, can inform our project by forcing us to consider the experiences of the human occupants who will theoretically exist within the spaces we design, with a focus on delight and comfort. Translating the importance of language through stories and narratives helps us draw inspiration from architectural meanings. “It’s not the architectural sense of the buildings that captivates me, but the world they translate”, writes Jean Nouvel in the book The Singular Objects of Architecture. With this, we strive to extrapolate the truth behind the mystery of what shapes a space and how its connections can capture moments of lightness, floating, and
compression.

Our aim for this design is to explore the ideas of mystery, lightness, and materiality of space. With special attention toward the connective structure that links the two projects together, a circulation flow is emphasized by a procession of capture and release signaled by visual cues distinguishing it from the existing spaces. With an upward sense of dematerialization, enhanced through the alternating stacking of floors, the overall design evolves in terms of form and lightness. Through both metaphoric and literal analysis we will examine how the use of concept words and approaches from previous projects can help create a dynamic
communal environment.

It is our approach to work side by side in a concerted way, helping each other complete work as the other team member becomes available. It is our strength to listen well and to offer a helping hand as a team foundation. Each designer will bring her own strengths to the design process, and we

We plan to meet as a group in the studio on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 2pm, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4pm

the big picture

The first impression of the residential community we have designed is shaped by materiality. Materials have been chosen to create a sense of lightness that will begin to dematerialize vertically. The orchestrated application of textures and translucencies sets the tone for the spaces to unfold. Enhancing the experience as a navigational tool, surface articulation is employed with a systematic approach throughout the community. As one enters, the navigational system is signaled by material contrasts designating residents’ placement in the overall arrangement. The application of materials (wood platforms as navigational paths, stucco walls as residential units, glass as gathering areas) directs the pathways throughout the arrangement. Enhancing strategies are employed to add layers of complexity to improve the overall experience for the occupant. Subtle articulation is provided through the modulation of the window systems that are applied consistently throughout the overall composition, creating rhythm and order. The subdivision of smaller modules within the surfaces adds environmental complexity and visual interest. The windows and doors add a layer of surface relief through the differentiation of gaps adding further complexity to the visual experience.

The irregular spatial composition defining the community is important in manipulating complexity in the experience of space. The inherent number of units with varying sizes and shapes with immense densities richly influence the complexity in this project. Ever since I was 15 I have been expressing my creativity through my hair.

If I'm Inspired. Or even a little bored, I tend to switch it up.

First was purple, then orange-ish red (when I got a bang)

I tried and failed with blue..which turned green and caused me to resort to black, I spiced it up in fall with auburn,

which led to red

It washed out and I rocked light brown,

I got bored and lightened up things with blonde,

and finally burned up with red AGAIN...

Over the years I have had many colors, but I always fall back to red.

But finally I have decided to step out of the norm and become a red head

.. I KNOW, I KNOW.. I just said red head! But what I mean is

the orange type of red head.

Jenga 7.0 - PORTMANTEAU

Once again we are having to reform and reorder our concepts to fit the pieces of another puzzle. We have travelled through the 7 Jenga's and have made it to a point from 1 to 3 to 6 to 12!

It sounds exhausting and I am positive that it will be. More minds means that there will be more opinions which can be a problem but I feel that the collaboration between [E]merge and Trepide could result in a plethora of diverse talent in both hand and computer skills.

Together the two groups form together to become Team Portmanteau.

Portmanteau is a word used to describe the blending of two words with two different meanings morphed into one word... like brunch!

The team name is the perfect representation of the two groups coming together as one. We both emphasize strong axis' of Vertical and Horizontal elements which both speak the same language but in different dialects.. We both have the same concepts, each group simply presents them differently.

Finding similarities between the two wont be difficult, it is maintaining your designer voice within a room full of voices who are just as loud which will be the challenge.

I've been meaning to blog about this artist for so long... I came across her work years ago

Her technique is so unique... so beautiful.

Of course Im a fan of the "splats" or dots (I use them to add character to my own work) but what blows my mind is that she uses ink to create these beautiful master pieces.
